There’s huge excitement in Bundoran where a €12.1m lotto quick pick has been sold by a local shop.

Last night news emerged that the huge lotto jackpot had been won in the north west and at 6am this morning Brian McGovern, owner of the American House grocery and newsagents at Main Street on the bridge in Bundoran took a phone call from the National Lottery to say his shop had sold the winner.

The lucky winner bought a 12 euro quick pick on Wednesday and their numbers, 13, 14, 24, 31, 35, 43 and bonus number 21 have given them a life changing amount of money.

This morning the shop was very busy with regular customers and many others dropping in to congratulate Brian and his staff. Jackie Gaye, Agnes Hastings, Majella Hegarty and the boss, Brian, were very excited by the news and were checking numbers for hopefuls.

Majella Hegarty, who has worked at The American House for more than 20 years now says there is “huge excitement” at the shop. “We have no idea yet if it was bought by a local person, a holiday maker or someone passing through. We have lots of passing trade as this is a good location on the main street”.

She said they got an early morning call from the boss Brian to ask the staff to come in early this morning to put up balloons and decorate the shop.

This is the second time the shop has sold a major lotto win. In the very early days of the lotto, in 1989, local man Frankie O’Gorman won a shared jackpot and since then the shop has sold lots of winning streak and game show winning tickets.

“We don’t know who the winner is, it could be anyone, but I hope they enjoy it and for us at the moment there is great excitement here. We have the champers on ice,” laughed owner Brian.

Locally there is speculation that the winner may be from Northern Ireland because they bought a 12 euro quick pick. “It may well be that someone handed in a sterling tenner and that allows them a 12 euro quick pick,” said one local business man from the resort town who was trying to figure out who won the jackpot.

For now the mystery remains, and if you are in or near Bundoran, be sure to check in with the very happy staff at American House who are having a very busy but a very exciting Thursday morning.
