A grenade found at the Mall Quay in Ballyshannon yesterday has been removed to safety by an army bomb disposal unit.
The unit from Athlone arrived at the quay at 9.55am and the grenade which was lying on open ground near old sheds at the water’s edge was inspected.
Shortly afterwards the bomb disposal team removed the grenade and had left the area by 10.20pm. It’s understood the grenade will be made safe via a controlled explosion at nearby Finner Camp.
Local sources told the Donegal Democrat the grenade was encrusted and looked “very old” and may well date back to World War II if not even further back.
The quay area, which had been made secure by An Garda Siochana overnight, is now open to the public.
