The 2014 Donegal Marathon was officially launched last evening in Letterkenny.
Among those at the reception in Letterkenny Public Services, Centre was two time Olympian and Irish Marathon champion, Danny McDaid from Glenswilly,
Both full marathon and half marathon events are scheduled to take place in Sunday August 24 marking the first marathon to be held in Donegal since 1981.
The launch event heard details of the route and that the event is hoping to draw athletes from across Ireland and as well as further a field.
While it is expected to draw some top Irish athletic talent, there is a strong emphasis on the many fun runners and walkers who will take part in the two events.
A new website with all the details and information was also launched and it can be viewed on www.donegalmarathon.ie.
Marathon committee chairman, Cllr Dessie Larkin said this was a community event and one that would showcase the county as a venue for sport and the ability to host a large scale event such as this.
Mayor of Letterkenny, Cllr Paschal Blake said the it was great to see a big event like this return on what would have been the International Folk Festival weekend and he was sure it would get broad support from across Donegal.
Event ambassador, Danny McDaid said he welcomed the return of the marathon and highlighted his delighted when in the last event in 1983 it “took me past my own from door” after he had already been Irish champion and competed in the Olympics.
Ciaran Martin then gave a demonstration of the new website and the route of both the half and full marathons were displayed.
