The Letterkenny Music and Drama Group (LMDG), which swept drama festivals last year with their memorable production of “The 39 Steps”, will add to their awards on Wednesday when Letterkenny Town Council hosts a civic reception in their honour.
The civic reception, the highest award the council can bestow, recognises the group’s winning the 2012 All-Ireland Confined Drama Festival and the Ulster Drama Festival. A reception for LMDG was among the priorities Letterkenny Mayor, Cllr. Dessie Larkin, set for the year.
The reception will be held at 7pm, April 10th, in the council chamber at the public service centre in Letterkenny.
“This group of people have pulled off an amazing coup in the theatrical world,” Mayor Larkin said. He said he had been privileged to see the production and understood why they had been recognised nationally. The mayor said the reception was also “in recognition of the wonderful contribution that the arts make to life in Letterkenny and Donegal, not just the actors, who are phenomenal, but the production side of it and the promotion side of it.”
“The 39 Steps”, a madcap version of the Alfred Hitchcock film, features four actors in nearly 150 roles. Directed by Pluincéad Ó Fearraigh, the production starred Kieran Kelly, Elaine Gillespie, John Ruddy and Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhrighde.
Mr. Ó Fearraigh said the group were delighted, saying it was a great honour to be recognised. LMDG have staged 42 plays and musicals since 1991.
