A Ballintra man and his family have been celebrating his recent been ordination as a Deacon in Rome.
Jonathan Michael Flood, of Ballintra, was ordained to the “Diaconate” on May 14, at the Papal Basilica of St. Peters, Vatican City, Rome. Rev. Flood was ordained by the Prefect for the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza.
Nineteen candidates in total were ordained to the Diaconate from the Pontifical International College, Maria Mater Ecclesiae where Jonathan has been studying for the past three years, under the direction of the Legionaries of Christ.
In attendance were his Mum and Dad, Angela and Paul, brother and sister, Shane and Pauline, aunts, uncles and cousins. Rev. Jonathan exercised his diaconal ministry for the first time, the following morning in the Crypt of St. Peters Basilica, at a special Mass, offered by his Father formator, Fr. Scott Hererra L.C.. Rev. Flood will return to the Diocese of Raphoe in July to begin his Diaconate Ministry in Ireland.
Jonathan has now been in the seminary since he left secondary school seven years ago, having studied in Maynooth for fours prior to his three years in Rome.
Hi mother Anegla says they are very proud of his achievements and re looking forward to welcoming him home very soon.
“It was lovely to be there. It has been something he has been working for since he entered the seminary after he did his leaving cert. He had been very dedicated,” she told the Donegal Democrat.
She added his Diaconate ordination is the first in the Ballintra area for 25 years.
