New Judge for Donegal?
There is growing speculation that Donegal is in line for a new District Court Judge.
According to well placed sources, solicitor and former long serving Fianna Fail Councillor in Kildare, Paul Kelly, could fill the role after he was nominated for the bench by the Government last December.
If so, he will replace current Judge of District Number 1, Justice Seamus Hughes.
The former Fianna Fail TD and Mayo State Solicitor was appointed to the bench in 2009 and began as judge in Donegal that December.
53-year-old Mr Kelly has served as a Kildare Councillor and has been a Lexlip Town Councillor for over 20 years. He also ran his own legal firm in Lexlip since 1982.
A statement on Mr Kelly's law firm website, dated December 8, 2010, states: "At its meeting yesterday the Government decided to nominate Mr. Paul Kelly for appointment by the President as a judge of the District Court. The vacancy arises from the retirement in July last of Judge John Neilan. The Government will take the necessary steps to formally advise President McAleese of the nomination in accordance with Constitutional procedures."
