No change in Ballyshannon town charges
by Matt Britton
Recognising the ever challenging economic times it was decided at the recent meeting of Ballyshannon Town Council that there would be no increase in the town rate.
Introducing his budget for 2011 the Town Manager, Liam Ward said, "I feel that in the present economic climate it is vital that the Town Rate will remain the same as the last two years.
"Over the past years, Ballyshannon Town Council has adopted a very pro-active approach to developing new services and amenities within the town.
"This year (2010) saw the official launch of the ‘Ballyshannon Historical Trail in association with Failte Ireland," said Mr. Ward.
He continued, "This trail consists of a range of tourist signage including orientation and interpretive and information boards which guide the visitor around the town.
"The aim of this project is to maximise visitors' overall experience by creating a pleasant , stimulating and welcoming environment.
The Budget provides for a gross expenditure of €130,700 and an estimated income, excluding Town Charges of €25,700.
The balance of €105,000 will be recouped by way of Town Charges which represents a Town Rate of €3.57 which has been the same as the previous two years.
In his Budget Mr. Ward recognised the importance of the Abbey Centre which he described as a "fantastic asset" to the town and also the arts, culture and tourism potential which the Council would both assist and encourage.
He also highlighted the successful "Backing Ballyshannon" forum which attempted to identify the issues facing the town in the light of the high unemployment rate and recent closures in the town and has also included a provision in the Budget for the initiative.
Mr. Ward said, "This platform encouraged people to meet collectively and share their knowledge base, their thoughts and their abilities with one final goal in mind - to offer viable proposals for the betterment of Ballyshannon."
Mr. Ward thanked the Town Clerk Ms. Mary Daly for her assistance in compiling the Budget and for her assistance and that of all the councillors throughout the year.
