The Irish premier of a new Hollywood movie is set to take place in Bundoran when they host the European surfing championships in the town in September.
The film, entitled “Soul Surfer” will be screened on September 24 to co-incide with the Eurosurf 2011 opening ceremony
The film is the incredible true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again through her sheer determination. The film features an all-star cast, including AnnaSophia Robb, Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid and Lorraine Nicholson along with Carrie Underwood in her film debut. In the wake of this life-changing event that took her arm and nearly her life, Bethany’s feisty determination and steadfast beliefs spur her toward an adventurous comeback that gives her the grit to turn her loss into a gift for others.
As usual there is an Irish connection – and a very special one to the people of Bundoran as it transpires that Bethany Hamilton is descended from a well-known Bundoran family, the Hamiltons of Hamilton Hall. Indeed Bethany visited the town around six years ago to find out more about her heritage.
Speaking on the announcement of the news, Eurosurf Bundoran Press Officer Shane Smyth said “We are thrilled to have the gala Irish screening of Soul Surfer as part of the opening festivities for Eurosurf. Such an inspirational film is bound to inject even more enthusiasm for the competitors taking part in the European Surfing Championships as the contest prepares to kick off. Having already seen the film, I can say that viewers are in for a treat – some stunning photography and some awesome surfing”.
