Donegal native Paul King, who is now based in Galway, is currently launching his first CD and will celebrate the event with a special gig on Saturday night at Rodden’s in Buncrana. The multi-talented writer/producer from Buncrana has crafted a wonderful album of original songs inspired by his deep-rooted love of funk, soul, and blues. The result is a mellow yet sophisticated mix of songs that get under your skin and almost make you feel like you’ve known them all your life. There are resonant echoes of funk/soul legends like James Brown, Prince and Jimi Hendrix, reggae rhythms and harmonies, and easy rock melodies that put you in mind of Neil Young and the Beatles.
Paul studied music in Derry and has built up an enviable reputation as a vocalist and guitarist gigging with well-respected bands over the years at venues such as Whelan’s in Dublin, The Roisin Dubh in Galway, the Nerve Centre in Derry and the Limelight in Belfast, among many others. Locals in Donegal and Derry will most likely remember him from the very successful band Last Exit.
The album is already garnering considerable praise online, and from reviewers of live gigs featuring Paul’s new band: Dez Carpenter on drums, Eoghan Judge on guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Mc Cabe on vocals; Karl Clews on bass and Cormac Britton on trumpet. Catch a new star on the rise at Rodden’s on Saturday night at 9pm, admission free or check out the man and his music on www.myspace.com/paulkingmusic.
