Swilly's Joe Duffy honoured by FAI

Tom Comack

Long serving Donegal soccer official Joe Duffy was honoured last weekend by the FAI at their annual general meeting in Wexford.

The Swilly Rovers man was among five officials from around the country that received an FAI Appreciation Award for his services to the association in Donegal for close on half a decade.

"It is a nice honour to receive alright and came as a total surprise. I think it was Dessie Kelly who recommended me for it and to be honest I think Dessie would be more deserving of such an award than me. I was involved down the years because I enjoyed it and got great satisfaction and I have made many great friends down the years," said Joe.

A member of the 1962 FAI Junior Cup winning Swilly team, Joe has given unstinting service to soccer in Donegal and the north west, first as a player and later as a referee and Donegal League official.

He was a referee in the Donegal League for well over 20 years and was one of the most respected officials in the county in all his years of involvement.

"We are all really delighted for Joe and very proud of him. He has a long association with the club and it is a great honour and one that he has richly deserved for his contribution both to the club and Donegal soccer," said Swilly Rovers PRO Danny Cullen.
