Letterkenny Institute of Technology will be looking to make it a fifth semi-final appearance in the Colleges’ Football Association of Ireland Umbro Cup in succession with a home match with Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology Castlebar on Wednesday (kick-off 2pm).
Having initially defeated Sallynoggin College from Dublin 3-0 in the first round in November the Port Road students came away with a fantastic performance and result winning 1-0 away at Cork Institute of Technology two weeks ago thanks to Luke O’Farrell’s header on 14 minutes.
The result will have given Niall McGonagle`s team a major confidence boost for Wednesdays match having lost out to DCU in the league quarter-final play-offs losing 1-0 at the end January on their last home outing.
LYIT, beaten finalists in this competition last year, will welcome Finn Harps’ U-19s player Dean Bonner and recent Derry City reserves acquisition Eoin Barrett, formerly of Fanad United, back into contention after both were unavailable for the trip to Cork due to illness.
Last week LYIT warmed up for the clash with an outing against Finn Harps first team and despite being short a number of regulars McGonagle would have been happy with his teams performance in a 3-0 defeat after using the game to give some fringe players an opportunity to stake a place in the side for the cup clash.
With the winners of this game due to play Carlow Institute of Technology, whom defeated the Letterkenny lads in last year’s cup final. The final of this year’s CFAI Cup is due to be played at Shamrock Rovers’ Tallaght Stadium.
