Donegal’s Chloe and Sam Magee enjoyed Turkish delight at the weekend when they swept before them to land the Turkish Open mixed doubles and ladies singles badminton titles.
For double Olympian and Irish number one, Chloe, it was a case of a double helping of delight as she won the singles on Saturday afternoon after herself and Sam had claimed the mixed doubles title earlier in the day.
Chloe, who suffered defeat in last week’s Irish final, won the singles in some style defeating top opposition from Estonia, France, Ukraine and Bulgaria, before defeating number one seed Sashina Vignes Waran, of France, in the final.
The French woman had defeated the home favourite and number seven seed, Ozge Bayrak, to book her place in the final, while Chloe defeated the number eight seed Stefani Stoeva from Bulgaria in her semi-final.
In the final, she overcame Bayrak in two straight sets. She won the first set 21-18 and the second 23-21, to claim the title and end 2012 on a high note.
In the mixed doubles, Chloe and Sam were the runaway winners with their three set quarter-final match against the highly fancied Swedish pair of Magnus Sahlberg and Cecilia Bjuner, their only real test.
After losing the opening match 19-21, the Irish pair bounced back to take the next two matches 21-17, 21-15 to claim a place in the semi-final.
In the last four, they defeated Jones Rafli Jansen and Hannah Pohl from Germany 21-5, 21-10. And in the final they had little bother with another German combination Fabian Roth and Jennifer Karnott to capture the title 21-14, 21-10, in convincing fashion.
