McHugh tops in Donegal '125'

From the first week of our special Donegal's GAA selection to find the best 125 county footballers to mark the 125th anniversary of the Association, it was clear that Martin McHugh would top the list.

When the eight selections of Edmund Brennan, Raymond Blake, John Michael O'Donnell, Eugene Gallagher, Jimmy Gallagher, PJ Buggy, Jimmy 'Nappy' O'Donnell and Danny Dowds were compiled, McHugh clearly came out on top with five of the selectors naming him as their No. 1.

Tony Boyle was a clear second with John Hannigan, Anthony Molloy and Sean Ferriter only separated by a whisker for the third, fourth and fifth positions.

It was the same story for the next four positions with Michael McLoone, Frankie McFeely, Sean O'Donnell and Martin Carney almost inseparable while Brian McEniff clinched the 10th spot from Gaoth Dobhair legend Hudi Beag Gallagher by the mininum.

Barry McGowan, Manus Boyle, Matt Gallagher and Martin Gavigan of the All-Ireland winning side made into the top twenty.

Of the selectors, Edmund Brennan can claim some kudos as he named nine of the first ten in his selection while PJ Buggy and Eugene Gallagher had eight of the final ten in their selections.

Edmund, who rarely misses a game involving Donegal at underage or senior level, can now claim that he knows a little about Donegal GAA when conversing with the likes of Danny McMenamin, Liam Bonner, Danny Langan, Noel Toye and Brendan O'Reilly when this gang assemble in their usual spot on the terrace in front of the press box at MacCumhaill Park.

Players from the distant past were probably at a disadvantage given that most Donegal supporters (as well as our selectors) would not have seen them in action.

Probably the player that suffered most because of this was John Hugh O'Donnell of Dungloe who was selected on two teams at No. 2 and No. 11 but then didn't feature at all on other teams. His final position of 72nd would have been much higher in normal circumstances.

Overall, there has been a great reaction to the feature and my thanks go to the selectors, all of whom were very co-operative in putting forward their selections.

Naming fifteen or twenty players is an easy task, but naming 125 is a very difficult task and all eight 'selectors' have to be commended for their work.
