McGinley to be vice-captain at Celtic Manor

Paul McGinley has been unveiled as one of Colin Montgomerie's Ryder Cup vice-captains at the European Tour headquarters in Wentworth.

The Dubliner, whose father Mick is from Dunfanaghy, will be joined by Dungannon's Darren Clarke and Dane Thomas Bjorn for the event that takes place at the Celtic Manor in Wales on October 1-3.

Although McGinley's bid to play at the Ryder Cup in 2008 resulted in him stepping down from Nick Faldo's backroom team at Valhalla, he underlined his talent for team captaincy at last September's Vivendi Trophy when his Britain and Ireland team got the better of Bjorn's European side. McGinley is confident that Europe will have a very strong team bidding to win back the trophy.

"On paper this will be the strongest European team ever produced," he said. "Hopefully we can make the right decisions and win the Ryder Cup back. I am really looking forward to the role."
