McCloskey's Letterkenny date edging closer

Alan Foley

Tickets for next month’s eagerly awaited European Light Welterweight Championship fight in Letterkenny went on sale yesterday (Wednesday).

The Aura Centre will host the bout between Dungiven’s undefeated Paul McCloksey and Scotland's Barry Morrison on Saturday, October 2. The Derry native fought at the venue before, when he defeated Mexico’s former WBC Lightweight Champion Cesar Bazan in 2008. Since then, the southpaw’s stock has continued to rise.

McCloskey won the vacant European light welterweight title in 2009 when he defeated Spanish boxer Daniel Rasilla after original opponent and champion Mbaye withdrew due to injury. The 31-year-old then defended the title against Giuseppe Lauri from Italy in June at the Kings Hall, Belfast, with a spectacular 11th round knockout.

The Aura Centre bill will also feature unbeaten Cavan star Andy Murray taking a step up in class as he takes on Johnny Nolasco from the Dominican Republic in an International 10-round contest.

The Hunky Dorys Fight Night on Saturday, October 2, also features Dublin's unbeaten featherweight prospect, Patrick Hyland, reigning Irish Heavyweight Champ, Coleman Barrett, Cork based Cuban sensations Alexei Acosta, Mike Perez and Luis Garcia, Mayo's unbeaten Super Featherweight Finbarr Eade and the professional debut of Donegal's own Michael McLaughlin.

Tickets, proved from €40, for the event are available from Ticketmaster.ie / 0818 719300, The Aura, Letterkenny: 074 9106422, The Radisson Blu, Letterkenny: 074 9194444, Eurospar, Dungiven: 028 77741245 or Julie, Dungiven: 07745 698372.
