Three Donegal athletes selected for Irish Schools’ team

After the Tailteann Games schools’ interprovincials on Saturday, three Donegal athletes - John Kelly (Royal and Prior, Raphoe) and Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town pair Kelly McGrory and Kate McGowan were automatically included in the Irish schools team which will take part in the Home Countries International in Ashford, Kent, in three weeks’ time.
The Games were held in vary unfavourable windy conditions at Santry and apart from the three Donegal athletes, there were international selection for Sligo athletes Zak Irwin (100/200m) and Cian McBride (800m).
Kelly McGrory and Kate McGowan were impressive in winning the 300m and 80m hurdles events and they were also third in the 80m hurdles and long jump events.
Kelly also ran the last event of the day, running the fastest 300m leg when anchoring Ulster.
John Kelly of Royal and Prior, Raphoe, once again pushed the 5k shot beyond 16 metres for victory.
Woodie’s DIY Junior and U-23 championships
John Kelly was back in action on Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Junior and U23 track and field championships in Tullamore and was just pipped for first place by Paul Collins of North Westmeath. The weather was reasonable throughout the day.
Finn Valley’s Dempsey McGuigan also had to be content with second place in the junior hammer, behind James McCabe (Dunboyne AC)
Another Finn Valley athlete, Sarah Collins, completed a 1,500m/5,000m junior double in 4:42.88/17:18.55.
Karl Griffin (Tir Chonaill AC) won the junior men’s 400m in 49.52 from Paul Scanlan (Leevale AC) with 50.18.
