Six-goal Lafferty sets new record

If a perfect hat-trick is one equally divided between a goal scored with the right foot, the left foot and a header, what’s three with the right, one with the left and two headers?
Whatever you want to call it; it’s six goals and that’s the amount Kyle Lafferty scored for Carry Rovers as they hammered Arranmore United 8-1 in Watson Hire Division One. It set a new club record.
Going into the match on Sunday, 18-year-old Lafferty from Woodland Dooish in Ballybofey had two league goals to his name, as well as three further goals in the cup competitions.
“I’ve never hit a hat-trick at senior level, although I did manage a few at underage,” the second year student in Sports Development and Coaching at Letterkenny Institute of Technology said.
It took 11 minutes for Lafferty to open the scoring when he converted a cross from Kevin McGlynn before Darren O’Leary added a second just six minutes later. Lafferty then made it 3-0 at the break when he drove into Frankie Early’s bottom corner on 43 minutes.
“We were in a good position at half-time and in the second half everything just went right for me,” centre-forward Lafferty continued. “The lads claimed afterwards that one of the goals was deflected but it certainly wasn’t and I’m claiming it!”
The home team kept the pressure on in the second half and Lafferty completed his hat-trick in the 52nd minute when he headed to the roof of the net and added his fourth, to make it 5-0, on the hour-mark.
Then, in 67 minutes, Lafferty’s fifth, which was a new club record in itself, came after Brendan McLaughlin’s pass.
Eight minutes later, McLaughlin scored himself before Lafferty got his sixth and Cappry’s eighth goal in the 84th minute after he beat the offside trap to score from close range. Shane Elliott got a consolation goal in the 88th minute for the Islanders.
Cappry’s biggest win of the season means they are now in fifth place in the table, five points behind both Eany Celtic and Cranford United, with a game in hand. Curragh Athletic lead the way and Cappry’s next fixture is on Sunday, at home against second-placed Donegal Town.
“We’re still in with a chance of getting promotion and that’s the main thing,” Lafferty added. “So hopefully we can get the right result against Donegal Town on Sunday.”
