Shay makes Trap happy

The news that Shay Given is considering a return to play for Ireland again has been hailed as very welcome news by Irish International manager Giovanni Trapattoni.

The Lifford native (pictured), who has fallen out of favour at Aston Villa (but that may change after Villa conceded 15 goals in their last three league games), has hinted in his column in the Irish Sun that he would like to return to international duty.

“I do miss playing for Ireland and we will see what happens in 2013,” said Shay in his column.

Shay announced his retirement after the very disappointing exit from the Euro 2012 in Poland during the summer.

At the time he said that he wanted to concentrate on his club career, but that hasn’t worked out that well with Shay playing second fiddle to Brad Guzan.

Irish manager Giovanni Trapattoni has said he would be more than happy to welcome the Donegal man back. The Italian says the development is good news ahead of the crunch World Cup clash away to Sweden in March.

Trapattoni has said he will talk with the Donegal legend this week with a view to a recall for the Poland friendly in February.

“I am very happy that Shay has got over the disappointment of the Euros and would be happy to see him available again.

“I will be in touch with him to discuss it shortly,” said Trapattoni.
