Last Friday evening saw a number of Sean MacCumhaill’s players battle it out for their honours to represent their county in the GAA Handball Ulster Championship.

In the 12 and under grade a number of promising young players contested for their chance to move forward in the competition. Matthew Doherty, Shane Griffen, Eoin Gillesspie, Anthony Gallagher and Oisen Marley were in the race for the top spot.

Each match revealed a tremendous amount of potential in every player; however, the outstanding skill and control of young Gallagher and Marley saw them battle it out in the club final.

Gallagher had claimed this honour in previous years, but young Marley, taking a step in his father’s footsteps, soon marked his territory by bringing the match to a tie breaker.

During a breathtaking game of diving and ball control from both players, the crowd looked on in anticipation to see who would be crowned Sean Mac Cumhaills champion.

In the end, the supreme serve from Gallagher’s left hand proved too much for Marley, however, this young gun will undoubtedly be back in the future. With Gallagher being crowned Mac Cumhaills champion, next step was claiming his right to represent his County.

The next opposition saw Gallagher take on the stiff competition of Odhran McGlynn from Glenfin. Indeed this was not the first time these young sports stars have crossed swords, with McGlynn contesting Gallagher in previous years.

McGlynn got off to a firing start with his consistent serves and persistence throughout rallies. However, the composure and determination of young Gallagher was triumphant on the day.
