All eyes will be on Pairc Naomh Columba this Friday evening to see if Michael Murphy makes his return to the football field when his club take on Gaoth Dobhair in the All-County League Division One.

Speaking to the Donegal Democrat after Sunday’s win over Cavan in Breffni Park, Michael said: “It’s coming on well. In the last two weeks there has been a massive improvement, but with injuries you can never be too positive.

“I’ll be aiming to be ready (for the Derry game) but trying to break into the team is another thing. Sitting on the sideline is not a good place to be.”

Indeed the words of Donegal manager, Jim McGuinness, after the game would suggest that the Donegal captain is almost ready.

“Michael is very focused himself and it wasn’t easy to hold him back this weekend. He was very eager to go forward with his rehab very quickly but we told him it wasn’t possible. That’s Michael, though. He’s very driven and wants to play for Donegal. Hopefully he’ll back for the next day out,” said McGuinness

“Michael is back jogging on it and he was out at the weekend pushing it to see if he could do a little bit more. Michael is Michael, of course. He’s a very driven man that has to be held back sometimes for his own good. He’ll start integrating with us now at the end of this week, in non-contact drills for a start.”

But could we see the Glenswilly man back for his first taste of football on Friday night? His club Glenswilly are firmly rooted to the bottom of the Division One table with their opponents, Gaoth Dobhair. The game is a huge one for both clubs as they begin their struggle to survive in the top flight.
