Carl McHugh heads Bradford City's third goal in their Capital Cup semi-final first leg win over Aston Villa at Valley Parade on Tuesday

Carl McHugh revealed he had scored against his hero following his goal that clinched Bradford City’s 3-1 win against Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old rounded off the win when he beat fellow Donegal man, Shay Given from Lifford, with a bullet of a header to give the League Two promotion hopefuls a real chance of becoming the first team from the fourth flight of English football to reach the final since Rochdale in 1962.

“It’s all a bit of a blur really,” Lettermacaward native McHugh said after the match. “I come from the same part of Ireland as Shay and I’ve watched him playing World Cups for Ireland so for me, it’s a dream come true.

Bradford have already accounted for Wigan Athletic and Arsenal in this season’s competition and now head to Villa Park with a 3-1 cushion for the second leg on Tuesday, January 22.

“There’s still a lot of work to do,” McHugh continued. “They’re still a top Premier League team and we have to go to their ground and it’s going to be a massive test.”
