Carl McHugh had a league debut to remember when he was part of the Bradford City side that shocked Championship side Watford 2-1 in the Capital One Cup third round on Tuesday night.

The Lettermacaward native was on the bench for his new side’s first three nPower League Two outings but was delighted to start at left-back against the side managed by Gianfranco Zola.

Losing through a fine strike from Ikechi Anya on 71 minutes, the Bantams drew themselves substitute thanks to a fierce drive from substitute Kyel Reid.

With the prospect of extra-time looming large, City won it through Garry Thompson in the last minute of injury time when Watford ‘keeper Jonathan Bond punched a Reid free-kick into his path.

Braford, who currently sit in fourth place in League Two with six points from their first three games, return to league matters on Saturday with an away fixture against Rotherham United.

McHugh gained experience on loan from Reading two years ago at Southern Football League Premier Division club Swindon Supermarine and Dundalk in the Airtricity League before being released by Reading. He has been capped at U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-19 level by the Republic of Ireland.

Elsewhere, Donegal was well represented in the Irish U-17 side as they defeated Azerbaijan 3-0 in a friendly at Milebush, Castlebar, on Tuesday.

Peter Burke, who is on the books of Sunderland and a native of Moville kept a clean sheet, while Letterkenny Ryan Rainey, who is about to sign at Wolverhampton Wanderers from Bonagee United, played in the back four.

Swilly Rovers’ Jordan Toland, who is from Ramelton, was a 59th minute sibstitute. Jack Byrne, Conor Dimaio and Cody Mulhall all found the net. Ireland face the same opposition in another friendly at the same venue on Thursday.
