McHugh hoping to take inspiration from Jim McGuinness

Donegal’s All-Ireland triumph and what Jim McGuinness has achieved with Donegal in the space of two years has become the motivation for Finn Harps to maintain their unbeaten run and to build for next season.

That is the view of Finn Harps captain and one the clubs; all time leading scorers Kevin McHugh, as Harps prepare to entertain Waterford United, in their third last game of the season on Saturday night at Finn Park. (Kick-off 7.45 pm)

“I was speaking to my uncle last night and we were just discussing Donegal’s success and what Jim McGuinness has achieved in just two years. It just shows what can be done with a plan, commitment and hard work. It definitely has to be an inspiration and motivating factor for us for the rest of the season to keep the winning run going and looking ahead to next season,” McHugh told the Democrat last night.

Harps are currently on a ten game unbeaten run which dates back to their 3-2 win over Mervue United at the beginning of July. Since that July 7th home win over Mervue they recorded three wins - over SD Galway, Longford Town and Athlone Town - and draws with Athlone, Wexford Youths, Limerick and Mervue United to move to fourth place in the table.

“It is a very good run. We are playing so well that it is the kind of run that you don’t want the season to come to an end. The mood and the confidence is so good in the squad that we all just want to play on.

“The younger boys are playing very well and have really come on the last few months. We have young fellas who three or four months ago weren’t even heard of and they have come in and are holding down regular places in the team and doing well against top class opposition.

“The goal now is to maintain the winning run and hold on to fourth place and then look forward to building on it for next season.”

Harps are currently in fourth place on their own, just one point ahead of fifth placed Wexford Youths. Limerkick FC are the leaders at the top of the top of the Airtricity First Division, four points ahead of second place Waterford United with Longford Town two points behind, in third place.

In their three games to date this season with Waterford, Harps have done reasonably well. They have taken four points out of a possible nine with a win - winning 2-0 away, losing 1-0 at home and drawing away in Waterford.

“The are still in the hunt for promotion, so it is certainly not going to be easy. But we are playing well and confidence is high and the mood is good in the squad and we will also take confidence from the fact that we have done reasonably well against them in our other three meetings this season.”

Saturday night’s game is Harps’ third last game of the season and is followed with SD Galway away and Longford Town at home on the next two weekends.
