McGowan and McHugh called up

St Eunan’s Mark McGowan and Kilcar’s Ryan McHugh have recived call-ups from Donegal manager Jim McGuinness and will be part of the Donegal squad for 2013.

McGuinness confirmed at the weekend that he has added both McGowan and McHugh and that he hopes to add a number of other players before the National League starts in February.

“Mark and Ryan have been added to the squad and there are a few more we hope to talk to in the next month or so before the start of the league,” McGuinness told the Democrat/Peoples Press.

“As well as the two lads we hope to add one or two more players at least. We will be giving a number of lads run outs in the Dr McKenna Cup after Christmas and we will see how they get on.”

McGowan was in the county squad in the past under Brian McIver and played against Roscommon in a championship qualifier in Ballybofey in 2008.

He is 24, and was a member of the 2006 the Ulster Minor championship team alongside Michael Murphy, Leo McLoone, Declan Walsh and Martin McElhinney, all members of this year’s All-Ireland winning squad.

Ryan McHugh is still a minor and played a key role in Kilcar’s county minor championship final victory over St Eunan’s yesterday in Sean MacCumhaill Park.

Yesterday’s win was McHugh’s second minor championship success having also defeated Cloughaneely in the 2010 final. He is the brother of Mark and son of the legendary Martin, a double All-Star and All-Ireland winner from 1992.

Ryan McHugh is also the holder of an All-Ireland Vocational Schools medal and was captain of this year’s county minor team.

McGowan has received the call-up on the back of a number of good performances for St. Eunan’s in this year’s run to the club’s 13th senior championship.

Both are known as defenders but are also pretty versatile and are equally at home in attack and really appear to be tailor made for the modern game and the famous McGuinness system.

Goath Dobhair’s Odhran MacNiallais, Cloughaneely’s Shaun McGarvey as well Eamon Doherty, St. Eunan’s, are also thought to be players that McGuinness has his eye on.
