McFadden helps DCU to O’Byrne Cup success
Antoin McFadden from St Michael’s was part of the Dublin City University side that won a thrilling O’Byrne Cup final 3-7 to 1-12 at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise on Friday night.
McFadden looked to be on a losing ticket as his team trailed 1-12 to 0-5 midway through the second half. However, even minus Michael Murphy from Glenswilly, who underwent a groin operation last month and Martin McElhinney of St Michael’s, who has an ankle injury, DCU finished strongly with McFadden scoring a point.
Kildare’s last score came on 45 minutes through wing-forward Eamonn Callaghan’s goal but from there the second string side managed by Kieran McGeeney sat back. Dean Rock from Dublin grabbed two goals for the students but despite their resilience Kildare led by two in stoppage time before his county companion Philip McMahon scored a dramatic winner.
Donegal eyes were also smiling in the Sigerson Cup this week. DCU will now take on University of Ulster Jordanstown for a place in the final after their comprehensive 1-14 to 1-7 home win over Dublin Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Termon goalkeeper Michael Boyle, still regarded as number one despite Rob Hennelly of Mayo playing in the O’Byrne Cup, saved a penalty from Mayo’s Alan Freeman, while McFadden scored the only goal of the game before the break.
UUJ’s win at NUI Galway at Dangan means the tournament hosts will have to watch from the sidelines ahead of the finals next week. Eoin Waide and point-scorer Leo McLoone were both on the UUJ team that won 0-12 to 1-6 thanks to three injury time score.
The other semi-final pairing sees hosts holders University College Cork take on NUI Maynooth. UCC got the better of an IT Sligo team that included Kilcar’s Mark McHugh, 2-7 to 0-11 in Edenderry, Co Offaly, while NUI Maynooth overcame University College Dublin, who had St Michael’s Martin McGinley in goal, 2-8 to 1-8 at home on Thursday night under the lights.
The semi-final and final weekend will take place next weekend in Galway with Sunday’s final live on TG4 from Pearse Stadium in Salthill.
