McBrearty involvement raised by St. Michael’s

The unplayed U-21 quarter-final meeting of Kilcar and St. Eunan’s on Sunday last was raised at Monday night’s meeting of the Donegal county committee.
The matter was raised by St. Michael’s chairman, Liam McElhinney, who queried why the game was fixed and why Patrick McBrearty, who is a member of the Donegal senior and a member of the Kilcar U-21 team, was not given the same courtesy as a number of other Donegal senior players earlier.
The first round, first leg games in the senior and intermediate championship were called off earlier in the summer following a plea from Jim McGuinness that a number of his squad were carrying injuries.
“Patrick is a member of the first 15 in the Donegal team and is also naturally a very important member of the Kilcar U-21s. I think it was very unfair that Patrick and the club were put in the position they found themselves at the weekend,” said the St. Michael’s official.
“Why was Patrick not afforded the same courtesy as Michael Murphy and Ryan Bradley when they were carrying knocks and the senior championship was called off. I think it was very unfair to fix the game and put Patrick and Kilcar in the position they found themselves at the weekend,” he asked.
In response chairman P. J. McGowan said he found it strange that he (McElhinney) was raising the matter. The St.Michael’s chairman stated that he was bringing it up on behalf of the player who was a county player and a very important member of the county senior team.
He also added that St. Michael’s were thrown out of the U-21 championship last year and that it was not good for football and does nothing for the game in the county.
Kilcar chairman, Kevin Doogan, told the meeting that the club did not wish to comment on the matter until the CCC ruled on the issue.
CCC chairman, Charlie Cannon, said that they fixed the game and had broken no rules.
The game was fixed for last Sunday, in Sean MacCumhaill Park, but Kilcar refused to play because they were going to have to field without Patrick McBrearty.
No decision was taken at Monday night’s meeting on the game.
