A series of missed opportunities cost LYIT men’s team as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against University of Ulster Jordanstown in the opening fixture of this season’s Colleges and Universities’ Football League Premier Division on Wednesday evening.

UUJ 2 The result now turns up the heat on LYIT who now face a must-win match on Wednesday against Queens University also at home if they are to stand a chance of progressing to the national play-off stage. LYIT settled and forced a number of corners approaching the half hour mark and from one of these they almost got their noses in front. Luke O’Farrell swung in a ball from the left corner stick and the ball found its way to Jordan Duffy, who forced a point blank save from Conor Mc Peake in the visitors’ goal before the ball was eventually hacked to safety. From another corner almost in identical fashion the UUJ net minder was in the right place at the right time to stop a Jonny Robb toe poke from O’Farrel’s centre on 32 minutes as LYIT finished the half the stronger.
Davitt Walsh was doing good work for LYIT and almost gave the home side the lead on 59 minutes when he turned swiftly on the edge of the box after receiving a pass from Luke O’Farrell. Walsh fired low and hard only to see his daisy-cutter beat Connor McPeake in the UUJ goal come off the inside of the post dance across the goal line and go wide.
UUJ took the lead on 71 minutes when Dylan Ramsey got his pocket picked. UUJ countered swiftly with Eoin Gillen releasing Vinny Henneghan, who then played in Cliftonville striker Peter Duffin to finish superbly past Ciaran Gallagher to make it 1-0.
From a Johnny Robb centre Anthony Appiah had a free header on the six yard line. Appiah done what every player in this position should do and headed the ball downward only to see the ball strike the turf before bouncing over the crossbar with the keeper in no man’s land.
Still the chances came. On 87 minutes after a short corner routine, O’Farrell combined with Ryan Curran, whose lovely delivery was met by Appiah three yards out but his header just skimmed the top of the crossbar.
It was game set and match to UUJ a minute from time as LYIT were again caught on the break after they pushed bodies forward looking for the all important equaliser. Duffin played Ballymena United’s Mark Anderson in and he sealed the points for the visitors firing past Gallagher on a one on one.
