A Denise Doherty goal was enough to see the ladies soccer team from LYIT reach the semi-final stage of the Colleges and Universities Ladies League on Tuesday afternoon with a victory over the University of Limerick in Athlone.

The Carndonagh native reacted quickest after strike partner Orla Farren`s initial shot had rebounded off the upright on 32 minutes after a sustained period of LYIT pressure to give Niall McGonagle`s team the lead going into the half-time break.

LYIT had dominated the opening period and but for some sub-standard finishing and a few excellent stops from the UL goalkeeper the half-time lead could and should have been much more.

In the second period, as so often happens, when teams don’t take their chances the UL girls grew in confidence as the second half wore on and the southern side looked dangerous on the break as LYIT continued to dominate but just couldnt get the second goal that would have but the game to bed.

However with Danielle Doherty and Mary T Cairns forming a solid partnership in central midfield and central defenders Chantelle Grant and Niamh McCarthy performing admirable in the heart of the LYIT defense the Port Road students held on for a memorable upset which will now see them take on the winners of Jordanstown and NUI Maynooth in next weeks semi-final contest.

LYIT: Sarah Faulkner, Nicole Clark, Aine Higgins, Chantelle Grant, Niamh McCarthy, Mary T Cairns, Fiona Rowland, Danielle Doherty, Orla Farren, Denise Doherty, Aishling Carlin. Substitutions Rebekah Mooney for Nicole Clark(injured) 17 mins, Norrell Nicholas.
