Footballer of the year, Karl Lacey, will be out of action until the end of March after undergoing surgery on a hip problem in the last few days.
The news was revealed at the RTE Sports Awards programme on Sunday night as Lacey was unable to be present for the show. The Four Masters man was one of the nominees for the Sportsperson of the Year award.
Because of the surgery, Lacey will miss the entire Dr. McKenna Cup and the National League campaign which is due to start against Kildare in Croke Park on Saturday, 2nd February.
The Donegal centre-half has picked up a number of injuries in recent years and took a couple of heavy knocks in this year’s All-Ireland final before then going on to play six club championship games in 21 days for Four Masters, something that has received much attention in recent months. That crazy schedule of games will now come into focus even more intently.
Lacey is Donegal’s most decorated footballer with four All-Stars and he won the ultimate award this year, being named Footballer of the Year.
All Donegal supporters will hope that he makes a full recovery ahead of the championship opener against Tyrone in May.
