Kildrum Tigers post win over Bonagee United

A strong second-half performance saw Kildrum Tigers move within four points of Ulster Senior League pace-setters Derry City.

Raymond McDaid’s team now take on Cockhill Celtic on Wednesday night in a game that could really announce their re-arrival as title contenders. Despite devoid a number of key players due to injury, the Tigers took control on Sunday, after falling behind to an Aiden McLaughlin goal early in the second half. The first half was a dour affair with little in the way of chances coming to either side. Gavin Doherty should have given the home side the lead, but he squandered a glorious chance when it presented itself, while Ronan Coyle also went close, fizzing a powerful effort just wide.

Bonagee had Sean Sandilands in temporary charge following the departure of Peter Moran as manager at the beginning of last week.

McLaughlin fired Bonagee in front, but Kildrum got back on level terms slowly but surely. Darren McCready crashed an effort to goal, but after his shot was tipped onto the crossbar, Coyle followed up to apply the finish.

Tigers edged in front ten minutes later when Doherty broke down the left flank, beating two Bonagee men before clipping the ball across goal where Damian Crossan was on hand to steer home. Fifteen minutes from time, Kildrum bagged the third when Doherty brilliantly chipped the ‘keeper from 20 yards. Referee: Paddy Melaugh.

Bonagee United 1  Letterkenny Rovers secured all three points in this local derby clash at Leckview Park and put a dent in Bonagee United’s title aspirations. In a closely contested match, it was ultimately decided by two goals in the space of four minutes shortly after the half-time interval by Rovers midfielder David O’Carroll. Chances were few and far between in the first half although Rovers netminder Jason Quinn was called into action to make a tremendous point blank save to deny Jason Doherty from close range. The home side stamped their authority on the game almost immediately after the break. James Gillen escaped his marker down the right flank before providing the perfect delivery for O’Carroll to connect with a beautiful drive into the back of the net from 10 yards. Boosted by the lead goal, Rovers went in search of a second and were duly rewarded on 50 minutes. Again, Gillen was the provider with a cross from the right hand side and with the Bonagee defence at odds, O’Carroll ghosted in at the back post for his second. The experienced midfielder did have the ball in the net again but this time his effort was ruled out for offside. With three minutes to go, Bonagee got a lifeline when their hard working front man Jason Doherty snatched a goal but they were unable to force home an equaliser while at the other end Peter McGlynn can close to adding a third for Rovers only to be stopped by goalkeeper Conor Harley. Referee - Stephen Toner
