Kilcar take exciting Southern U-13 title

Southern U-13 champions Kilcar.

Southern U-13 champions Kilcar.

Last Saturday afternoon in Dunkineely St Naul’s and Kilcar contested the under 13s division 2 title and what a game this was.

St Naul’s went into the game as favourites and protecting an unbeaten record but as has been shown all through the season, league form just goes out the window when it comes to finals.

Kilcar started the game the better with a fine point from Owen McCormack and the first goal of the game from Shane Redmond. Naul’s midfielder Shaun Meehan replied with a fine score which was quickly followed by a point from lively full forward Paddy Mogan. The next 15 minutes of the match were dominated by Kilcar and the impressive captain Brian O’Donnell dictated the midfield with Gary Molloy. Three points from Kilcar were followed by a well taken goal from right half-back Ryan O’Donnell which left the score 2-4 to 0-2. There was still time in the first half for the Mountcharles men to launch a comeback and with 2 points from the strong running Meehan and another from Kyle Campbell. Half-time Kilcar 2-4 St. Naul’s 0-5.

St Naul’s, led by midfielder Meehan, scored the first point of the second half which was quickly followed by a well taken goal from his midfield partner John Relihin and the game was now on. A great battle in midfield was now unfolding with both number 8s Brian O’Donnell and Shaun Meehan proving influential in their teams push for the trophy.

An individual goal from Meehan and 2 frees left the teams level for the first time since the start of the game 3-7 to 2-10. Kilcar full forward Paddy Mogan found himself one on one with the Naul’s keeper and what a save from Dara Griffin to keep the teams level at that point.

This was a great comeback from the Mountcharles men and it would of broken many a team but Kilcar inspired by O’Donnell. Redmond and Molloy rallied and again opened up a 5 point lead which included a brilliant goal from Gary Molloy.

Another great advert for under age football their didn’t deserve to be a loser in this one but it was Kilcar who lifted the trophy as both teams now go forward to represent the southern board in the County semi finals.

A quick note on referee Martin McShane who had an excellent game in the middle.
