Harps accept invitation to join Ulster Senior League
Finn Harps have accepted an invitation to rejoin the Ulster Senior League and will be back on board for the new season in March.
It means the league’s numbers will rise to 10, although secretary Mark Duffy revealed Sligo Rovers were unable to join the ranks. An approach was made to both Harps and Sligo in the wake of a delegate meeting in November.
Both Killea FC and Convoy Arsenal dropped out of the league in the last two seasons and nine teams played out last season, with Derry City winning the championship.
Harps and Sligo are currently fielding teams in both the Airtricity League and the Dr Tony O’Neil U-19 League. Therefore, there was no avenue for the clubs’ fringe players over the age of 20 to play competitively.
Sligo did nor rule out the possibility of joining the Ulster Senior League at a future date as they “would revisit the suggestion in 2014” and were thankful of the invitation.
Harps, on the other hand, will form part of the intermediate set-up for the first time since 2005. The Ballybofey side won the Ulster Senior League back in 1999 with a team that included current club captain Kevin McHugh.
As had been expected, there was no change to the executive at Monday night’s AGM at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny with each member returning to their post unchallenged.
John McCafferty, who in June took over as chairman from a “disillusioned” Eamon McConigley, who stepped aside after 14 years, retains his position and can looked forward to a first full season at the helm.
Jim McConnell, who was absent on Monday night with illness but sent his apologies, remains on as vice-chairman. Mark Duffy is the secretary for another 12 months and his assistant secretary will be Niall Callaghan. Donal Coyle will again act as treasurer, Paul McGovern as PRO and Dessie Kelly will stay on as registrar and disciplinary secretary.
