Letterkenny teenager Dale Gorman will sign for League One side Stevenage Borough in July.

Gorman impressed scouts at the Hertfordshire club whilst on international duty with Northern Ireland’s U-17 side, who were based in Stevenage in October prior to their Uefa U-17 Championship qualifiers in Estonia.

Manager Gary Smith expressed his desire to sign the central midfielder straight away but with three games to play for Northern Ireland U-17’s in Estonia, it has been agreed Gorman will sign in July, one month after his 17th birthday.

Northern Ireland competed well, qualifying for the Elite qualifying stage after finishing second in the four-team group. They defeated Wales 4-0, drew 1-1 with Estonia and were narrowly beaten 3-2 against England. They were due to learn their upcoming opponents in the Elite stage last night. Gorman previously won 10 caps for Northern Ireland schoolboys in the Victory Shield.

Gorman was under the management of his grandfather Tony until last year at Glencar Schoolboys, before joining Letterkenny Rovers. He made his debut this time last year, coming on as a substitute for his father Anthony in Rovers’ FAI Intermediate Cup loss against College Corinthians in Cork.

The St Eunan’s College fifth year student played for the Leckview Park’s U-16, U-18, U-19 and first teams and scored for Stevenage in a trial match, which finished 2-2, against Bournemouth last month.

Stevenage are currently in seventh place in League One and are currently developing a state-of-the-art training complex, the Bragbury End Sports Ground.

“All Dale ever wanted to do was play football,” said his father Anthony, who played for Sligo Rovers, Harps, Portadown, Linfield and Coleraine. “He’s delighted with the opportunity. It’s great for him.

Myself and my wife Shiela will be travelling over after Christmas but by all accounts they’re a well-run, stable football club who are working on a new training facility, which should be finished come the summer.
