Four Masters-Naomh Conaill semi-final to go ahead on Sunday
While Four Masters are likely to make a request to the Donegal Co. Fixtures committee to postpone their RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta semi-final against Naomh Conaill - fixed for Letterkenny on Sunday - the tie is likely to go ahead.
Four Masters defeated St. Michael’s with a magnificent display in the quarter-final replay tonight (Thursday) in MacCumhaill Park by 1-15 to 1-8, but the game was their fifth game in 19 days and they are far from happy to be asked to play the sixth game (in 22 days) on Sunday next.
However, Donegal vice-chairman, Charlie Cannon, chairman of the fixtures committee, told the Democrat “that the fixture has been made”.
Mr. Cannon said he understood the difficulties of Four Masters but also added that any replay from the semi-final games have been pencilled in for Wednesday or Thursday of next week to give the finalists a little time to prepare for the Co. final which is scheduled for Sunday, 4th November.
The Donegal senior championship was postponed earlier in the summer because of Donegal’s success in the Ulster and All-Ireland championship series and the county were given an extra week by the Ulster Council to have a team ready for the Ulster championship.
At the time, the fixtures committee said they could accommodate the postponement but it would mean that play-offs and replays would have to be played midweek. That decision has now meant that Four Masters have just three days to prepare for the semi-final meeting with Naomh Conaill.
The other semi-final between Dungloe and St. Eunan’s takes place in MacCumhaill Park on Saturday next at 8 p.m.
