Finn Valley’s John Kelly took gold in the junior shot event at the indoor championships in the new Athlone IT Indoor Arena at the weekend.

The Royal and Prior student threw the 6kg shot 15.81 metres. His Finn Valley club mate, Shana Carlin clocked the fastest time for any masters athlete a over the 60 metre distance when winning the over-35 category in 8:56 in the national masters championships.

At the same venue, Letterkenny AC’s Darren McBrearty ran a season’s best of 3:44.11 when placing third in a special senior 1500m held to facilitate athletes chasing qualifying standards. John Travers of Donore Harriers took victory in 3:43.53 with Conor Bradley from City of Derry second in 3:44.07.
