Shane Duffy has been awarded captain’s duties by Republic of Ireland U-21 manager Noel King for tomorrow’s friendly against Holland at Tallaght Stadium (kick-off 1pm).

This will be Duffy’s 11th appearance for Ireland’s U-21 side, despite having represented Northern Ireland at junior level. Duffy plays his club football at Everton and the Derry native, whose father Brian is from Letterkenny, will captain the national team for the first time in his career.

“I just don’t like to be a quiet centre half,” the 21-year-old said. “I will take the pressure with me and hopefully I can just play my normal game. The way I play anyway, I’m a leader. Hopefully I can show that on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Bradford City defender and proud Lettermacaward native Carl McHugh has had his stunning Capital One Cup form rewarded with a place in the squad.

The senior game between Ireland and Poland tomorrow evening at the Aviva Stadium will have no Donegal representatives following Shay Given’s omission from the squad.

The Lifford native had retired from international football after Euro 2012 but over Christmas made himself available for selection again. However, the Aston Villa shotstopper was overlooked by manager Giovanni Trapattoni. Millwall’s David Forde will have big boots to fill as he takes over goalkeeping duties. Killybegs native Seamus Coleman, who was man of the match in Ireland’s last outing, which was a 1-0 loss at the hands of Greece, is absent with a thigh injury.

The FAI have announced that ticket holders for the evening’s senior friendly between Ireland and Poland at the Aviva Stadium can be granted free entry to the U-21 game.
