Donegal Ladies get Division One campaign up and running

Donegal host All-Ireland champions, Cork, in what is the match of the day in Division One OF Bord Gais Ladies National Football league.

The game is in Ballyshannon with throw-in of 12.30 pm and with 2010 All- Star Yvonne McMonagle, Anne Marie McGlynn, Mari and Katie Herron, Niamh Hegarty, Patrice Rooney and Olive McCafferty not available to manager Michael Naughton, it is going to be a difficult opener.

When you add in that long serving players Marie Devenney and Diane Toner having retired, it will be very much a new look Donegal that takes this field this afternoon for the clash with the Rebelettes.

However, with 2010 All-Ireland winning Intermediate captain Aoife McDonnell and Karen Guthrie, Grainne Houston, Kelly Wilson, Ciara Hegarty, Ailish Ward, Roisin Friel and Geraldine McLaughlin still around, it will be a fairly experienced Donegal side that face Cork.

Karen Feeney, another member of the All-Ireland winning team, is also in the squad but is not available for this afternoon’s opener.

Today’s game is the first of seven games in the league for Donegal and with five of the seven at home, hopes are high that Donegal will once again give a good account of themselves in the top flight.
