Danny O'Connor will be in action in Madison Square Garden on St Patrick's Day

Two Irish-American boxers who are part of the ‘Up Your Irish’ St Patrick’s Day card at Madison Square Garden in New York city have promoted their Donegal backgrounds.

Danny O’Connor, from Framingham, Massachusetts, and Danny “Little Mac” McDermott are hoping to win places in Irish fight fans’ hearts with impressive displays on Lou DiBella’s undercard, which is headlined by Sergio Martinez and Matthew Macklin’s WBC Middleweight championship bout.

O’Connor, who has won 16 from his 17 professional fights to date with four by knock-out, is a 2008 Golden Glove champion and wants to build a strong relationship with the fans from Ireland who attend the event on March 17.

“My ancestry goes back to Donegal,” he told the Donegal Democrat. “My father, who has dual citizenship, traced it back and my great-grandparents came from the county. I was able to visit when I was younger and I am dreaming of the day I will have the chance to come back and to bring my son Liam to visit. It means a lot to be Irish.

“I would also like to say that I never try to be anything I’m not and as I’m very proud of my Irish heritage I am also born in America and I am very proud of my roots here also.”

Lightweight McDermott is from New Jersey and is 32, with a ring record of nine wins, four by knock-out with one draw and four defeats. His grandparents are from Donegal and Foxford, Co Mayo.
