Bernie Brennan, who was elected on to board of Directors and Gerry Davenport, elected as National President at the Community Games AGM at the weekend.

Offaly hosted the National Congress of the H.S.E. Community Games last week-end. Volunteers from all over the country descended on Tullamore to discuss the future of the organisation which offers a wide range of sporting and cultural activities to children.

The event takes the format of a congress rather than an AGM for the first time in its 42 year history. Community games have recently adopted a new strategic plan to reemphasise its aim of promoting participation over competition. Guests who attended over the week-end included CEO of Paralympics Ireland Liam Harbison, and chairman of Offaly County Council Peter Ormond. RTE Soccer Reporter Tony O’ Donohoe who acted as M.C. on Saturday night and did a great job.

In his President’s Address, Mr Gerry Davenport welcomed everyone to the 42nd Annual General Meeting. He said that we have seen a lot of changes in the Organisation. Our new programme of activities comes into effect this year. He also reiterated that our aim of promoting participation over competition. He thanked our title Sponsor, the Health Service Executive and the Irish Sports Council whose continued support is vital in helping us to achieve our goals. He acknowledged the support of Minister Michael Ring and the department of Transport, Tourism and Sport in providing funding for the purchase of equipment. Gerry went on to say that as a board that we have the responsibility to ensure that all competitors are given opportunity to compete to the highest standards and it’s up to us to ensure that officials are competent in the tasks that they are allocated and to provide training where necessary. He thanked the hard work of his Board members during the year, to all members of N.E.A.C., the Committees and all volunteers throughout the 665 areas in the organisation.

During the week-end a series of workshops took place as did recommendations and motions which included seeded draws and photo finish technology in athletics.

We had the Election of Officers and Donegal are very proud to have Gerry Davenport re-elected as National President, Bernie Brennan elected as a board member, May Logue elected on to the Finance Committee and Catherine Boyce elected onto the P.R Committee.
