Finn Valley’s Sarah Mary Collins clocked a personal best in the 3,000m at the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championship in Barcelona on Tuesday.

Collins came home in 9:26:26 to finish in 13th place and fifth European in the final, one which was won by Mercy Chebwogen from Kenya in a personal best of 9:08.88.

Hiwot Gebrekidan from Ethiopa was second with 9:09:27, while Great Britan’s Emelia Gorecka finished with bronze with 9:09.43. Collins can now look forward to the European Cross-Country in December in Budapest and European Junior Championships next season.

Letterkenny Athletic Club’s Ruairi Finnegan was eliminated from the 1500m after finishing 10th in his heat on Tuesday. Finnegan came home in a time of 3:53:95 in the third of three hearts in Catalonia, which was a disappointing one since he had made the qualifying standard when he clocked a personal best of 3:46:27 in Watford only last month.

On Friday, Finnegan’s Letterkenny teammate Mark English and Tir Conaill’s Karl Griffin will take part in the 800m, while Dempsey McGuigan from Finn Valley is involved in the hammer throw on the same day.

Elsewhere this week, Tori Pena from Finn Valley competed in Sotteville, France, on Tuesday clearing 4.30m in the pole vault. The event was won by world record holder Yelena Gadzhievna Isinbayeva from Russia with 4.75m.
