Seamus Coleman’s return to fitness with the goal for Everton’s reserves has given the Killybegs native a chance to stake his claim for a place at Euro 2012.

The 23-year-old has been an absentee from the Everton first-team since the first weekend in January, when he suffered a recurrence of a thigh strain against Tamworth in the FA Cup third round.

However, on Monday night the right-sided player was on the scoresheet for the Merseyside club’s reserves in their 6-3 win over Newcastle United at Finch Farm training complex. Coleman marked his comeback by opening the scoring on five minutes and played 55 in all. The 23-year old followed up a parry by Newcastle goalkeeper Jak Alnwick and tucked home.

Coleman has yet to play for Ireland this season but was last week named in Giovanni Trappatoni’s 24-man squad for Ireland’s home friendly with Czech Republic on February 29, while he hopes to be one of the 23 players that will make the trip to Poland for the European Championships in June.
