Coleman makes comeback in FA Cup win

Killybegs native Seamus Coleman made his return to first team action yesterday as he helped Everton in their FA Cup fifth round win against Blackpool at Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old has been an absentee from the Everton first-team since the first weekend in January, when he suffered a recurrence of a thigh strain against Tamworth in the FA Cup third round.

However, on Monday night the right-sided player was on the scoresheet for the Merseyside club’s reserves in their 6-3 win over Newcastle United at Finch Farm training complex. Coleman marked his comeback by opening the scoring on five minutes and played 55 in all.

With the Republic of Ireland due to play Czech Republic in their final friendly international on Wednesday, February 29, Coleman was eager to stake a claim to Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni for a place at Euro 2012 in June, and was introduced after 56 minutes of yesterday’s tie against a Blackpool side whom he helped get promotion to the Premier League whilst on loan in 2010.

His manager David Moyes, speaking on Friday, was pleased to have Coleman back in contention.

“He’ll be back and it’s great to have him back in. It’s his first game in a long, long time.”
