Ballintra Races draw the crowds once more

AFTER Croke Park, the Donegal public got their chance to continue their celebrations and they did so in style yesterday afternoon at the annual Ballintra Races.

The popular event saw crowds coming from far and near to wind down and enjoy the Bank Holiday. With the local GAA club Naomh Brid flying high in Celebrity Bainisteoir and their clubman, David Walsh, at the heart of Donegal’s quest for an All-Ireland title, the Ballintra Races was full of conversation regarding the topics of Sunday.

There was plenty of colour also with the ladies vying for the best dressed lady and for those not totally immersed in the horse racing, there were plenty of sideshows to keep young and old happy.

Included in these were the boucy castles and a penalty kick competition run by Copany Rovers while Naomh Brid Bord na nOg provided refreshments for all.

This immensely popular event has grown and grown since its return eleven years ago. Thousands of spectators, fashionistas and fun seekers make their way to the transformed farming fields for fantastic racing and family fun.

The Ballintra Races is now recognised as one of the best amateur flat race meetings in Ireland and second only to the Dingle Races in County Kerry.

The six race card was again competitive with plenty of action in the betting ring and all proceeds from the day are spread among local charities to aid the community.
