Ardara surprise St Michael’s

ARDARA posted a fine away win at St Michael’s at the Bridge in Dunfanaghy on Sunday to give themselves some breathing space at the bottom of the All-County League Division One.

St Michael’s 1-9

Ardara 2-10

The away side led 1-4 to 0-5 after an enterprising first half against the wind. The score was level at 0-3 to 0-3 after 21 minutes with Kevin Byrne, Brendan McNelis and Kenneth Doherty on the mark for the visitors, while Colm McFadden’s brace was added to be a Christy Toye point for St Michael’s.

Daniel McLaughlin and another Toye point gave the locals a two-point advantage before the pivotal score of the first half-hour when Doherty got on the ball after a flowing move and squared for Michael Maloney to palm home on 26 minutes. Gareth Concarr then added a free to make the interval total.

Despite playing against the breeze in the second half, St Michael’s were expected in certain quarters to cut into their deficit but it was Peter McHugh who grasped control of proceedings. He scored two fine points to double his side’s lead.

However, at the other end, St Michael’s just wouldn’t lie down and Colm McFadden smashed past Declan Gallagher for a goal to put the home team right back into the game six minutes into the half.

Substitute Brian McLaughlin then levelled things up at 1-6 apiece and it was St Michael’s who apparently held all the aces midway through part two.

McHugh, again, steadied Ardara with another score and Oisin O’Donnell and Doherty re-established their three-point lead with well-taken scores. Then, the issue was put to bed when Ciaran Breslin punched home another Ardara goal on 48 minutes.

St Michael’s, six points down, did manage to halve that particular deficit but when they wanted goals, ultimately points from substitute Martin Breslin, Daniel McLaughin and Brian McLaughlin couldn’t prevent them going down to a surprise home loss.
