Killybegs' plans falling into place

Uachtarán Cumann Luthcleas Gael Christy Cooney will officially open Killybegs' new playing facility at Fintra on May 15.

The project has taken almost a decade to complete since work first began on the site in the year 2000 but the people of the south-west can beam a wide smile with one of the best facilities in the county, and, without argument, the most idyllic of settings overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The new field will be named the Eamonn Byrne Memorial Park, named after the former club player, who represented Killybegs in the and 1970s and 1980s, who died suddenly in the club colours.

The festivities on the day will open with a challenge game between the hosts and Tr Conaill Gaels, before Christy Cooney will cut the ribbon. Donegal will face Leitrim immediately afterwards. The action will be followed by a buffet in the nearby Clock Tower that will be attended by players and club people past and present, associates and dignitaries.

The new facility includes a sand-based pitch, practice pitch and dressing rooms, as well as a car park that can hold 400 cars. In time, the Killybegs club plan to further the facility by means of constructing a clubhouse with television rooms and a gymnasium.
