Just what the Doc ordered
For all the teams chasing the Dr. Maguire Cup, Michael Doherty will be on their Christmas card list as he inspired Four Masters to sensational victory to dump four in-a-row chasing champions St. Eunan's out of the Donegal senior championship on Saturday night.
While this victory was honed out of hard work and commitment and no little skill, one man more than all others was the toast of Donegal Town on Saturday night and that was ace freetaker Michael Doherty.
A noted marksman right up through the underage ranks and in more recent times at senior level with both club and county even by his own admission Doherty exceeded his own expectations on Saturday night in Sean MacCumhaill Park. In all he kicked eight of his side's tally of 11 points - all from placed balls.
"To be honest it was one of those games when everything went right for me and they just sailed over," said Doherty of three of his frees which were from in the region of 55 metres.
"Normally 45 metres is my range and anything beyond that is a bit tricky and is hit and miss. I would get the distance alright, but normally the accuracy would be a problem.
"But on Saturday night they just went over and from once the first one went over I just grew in confidence and thankfully the others sailed over too. Of them all I suppose the one close to the sideline, because it was from an angle, was the one I got the greatest satisfaction from but overall it was good to see them sail between the posts."
While his side had beaten the highly fancied champions and cracked the championship race wide open, the former county man said he nor none of his team mates were getting carried away with the win.
"It was a great win and we were the hungrier team on the night and probably wanted to win more than St. Eunan's. But we have won nothing yet. We play Killybegs in the semi-final and they will not be easy. We have met them numerous times down the years and in particular at underage level and there is never much between us, so we are not going to look beyond the semi-final.
"It is good to be in the semi-final and we are especially looking forward to it as we have struggled to get past the quarter-final in recent years. But we have put in an extra effort this year and it is good that it has paid off so but there is still a long way to go.
"While St. Eunan's might be gone there are three other good teams along with ourselves still in the competition and I am sure the other three, as we do, feel they can go all the way. But we are not looking beyond Killybegs," said Doherty.
