Finn Harps have been awarded a First Division Licence by the FAI Club Licensing Committee.
The club complied with all aspects of obtaining a Premier Division, except infrastructure, due to insufficient number of seats in Finn Park. However, the licence obtained is enough for Division One, which Harps open with a fixture away to Limerick FC on Friday, March 2.
It was a worrying winter for Harps, who required €47,000 to wipe out their footballing debts from last season before a December 21 deadline. However, a number of fundraising initiatives, as well as a donation of €20,000 means senior football will remain in Donegal. Harps hope to move to a new stadium in Stranorlar in the future.
“The club is delighted to achieve its licence after a difficult year in 2011”, said Harps chairman Joey O’Leary on receipt of the news yesterday. “The decision of the licensing committee emphasises the importance of the development of the new stadium in Stranorlar.
“I would like to thank everyone who helped in the licensing process, especially treasurer Denise O’Neill and Lucia Foley who assisted in providing the financial information required in such a timely manner. Also, a special word of thanks to all members of the club committee who helped raised the necessary funds to achieve our licensing requirement.”
