Given opts to stay with Man City

Alan Foley

Shay Given has decided to stay at Manchester City to fight for his place rather than join Mark Hughes at Fulham.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper had initially been looking to leave Eastlands after manager Roberto Mancini publicly stated that Joe Hart would take over the number one position in the squad. The Lifford native has yet to start a game since dislocating his shoulder against Arsenal in April.

Since the start of the new season, reportedly, Given has met with Mancini several times and has been persuaded to stay in Manchester and believes that he still has a chance for regular football, given the four competitions that the club will be competing in.

Tomorrow, Given is expected to make a record 105th international cap when Ireland open their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign against Armenia at the Hanrapetakan Stadium in Yerevan (4pm Irish time). Giovanni Trapattoni’s side then face Andorra on Tuesday evening in the first competitive international at the Aviva Stadium.
