Eamonn McGee's London stay may be short-lived

The 'will he, won't he' saga on whether Eamonn McGee was going to transfer to Tir Chonaill Gaels and London was up in the air again as we went to print on Wednesday.

It was thought the Gaoth Dobhair clubman put an end to speculation when his transfer to Tir Chonaill Gaels finally passed through Croke Park on Friday afternoon last and he played with London against Kilkenny in Division 4 of the National League on Sunday afternoon in Nowlan Park.

He was introduced as a substitute in the course of the game and scored three points in London's facile 1-17 to 0-2 win over the Cats.

However, the Democrat has heard from well placed sources that McGee could be on his way back to Gaoth Dobhair.

Eamonn has been living and working in London since last November and had been mulling over what to do over the past five months.

Speaking to Donegal on Sunday the weekend before last he said there was no question in his mind but that he wanted to stay at home and play for Donegal and Gaoth Dobhair but that it all came down to work.

"If I had a choice, I want to be at home playing with Gaoth Dobhair and Donegal. But at the same time I have to be selfish about the thing and do what is best for myself. It's all down to work. There is no point being at home if I am not working and I can be working every week in London," he said.

During his two weeks at home he trained with the club and also attended a number of interviews for jobs. But it is understood when nothing materialised on the work front Eamonn took the decision to transfer his allegiance. He travelled from Donegal to Kilkenny on Sunday last to join up with his new London teammates, who he had been training with since the start of the year.

However, with the news that he is poindering a quick return, it could mean that he would be available for Gaoth Dobhair when the the All-County League begains at the end of March.

Donegal manager, John Joe Doherty, speaking to the Donegal Democrat, prior to the latest twist, expressed disappointed in losing him.

"We don't like losing anyone and if Eamonn was about and fit he would definitely be an addition. We spoke last week and Eamonn knows my thinking on the situation. All I can say at this stage is wish him well and he knows the door is always open to him," said Donegal boss John Joe Doherty on the departure of the versatile defender.

Having played for London on Sunday last, Eamonn has ruled himself out of playing for Donegal in the League, but he would be available for the Ulster Championshp if he transfers back.
