Deignan confirmed for Spain
Letterkenny's Philip Deignan (pictured) will return to the place of his greatest triumph with news that he has been selected for the final line up for the Cervélo Test Team's squad for the Vuelta a España.
The Swiss team has showing confidence in the Letterkenny rider, who won a stage and finished ninth in last year's Vuelta but hasn't show the same form since. They are hoping that he will rediscover his top condition in time for the race start in Seville on August 28th.
26-year-old Deignan's main goal will be to help 2008 Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre in his bid to win the Vuelta. The team will focus its general classification ambitions on the Spaniard, and will also chase sprint stage wins with the Norwegian Thor Hushovd.
The other six riders on the team are multiple track world sprint champion Theo Bos, Iigo Cuesta, Stefan Denifl, Xavier Florencio, Oscar Pujol and Xavier Tondo.
Deignan will join Nicolas Roche in the three week tour. He was already confirmed by his Ag2r La Mondiale team and, having placed 15th in the Tour de France last month, will again be the team leader in Spain.
